MISSION: NICARAGUA
Emely Guevara
Of the many wonderful children our team has met on Mission: Nicaragua, Emely Guevara Sanchez from Motastepe is a special case. She had a condition called Subglottic Stenosis and they helped her by giving her a tracheotomy which has left her with the stoma in her neck for several years. There is no possibility of reconstructing her airway in Nicaragua. Through the efforts of our team, Emeley came to the states with her mom, Coni, to have airway reconstruction surgery. This was done by a pediatric ENT specialist by the name of Dr Andrews and take place at All Children's in St. Petersburg, FL. Without the reconstruction she is in danger of suffering from continual life threatening respiratory infections.
UPDATE:
Dr. Andrews committed to donating his services and All Children's Hospital approved her case. It took a long time, but her medical visa was approved by the Nicaraguan government and she joined us October 11, 2009! Over $11,000 in donations were given in love to pay for the cost of Emeley's trip and her initial surgery was successful. Unfortunately, after returning to Nicaragua Emely developed a severe infection and pneumonia and her tracheotomy was put back in, taking her back to square one. We were able to aid in her return to the states for a second surgery that she currently awaits. She will be evaluated again in October 2010 with the surgery date to be determined then. Funds are still needed for ongoing costs with her current medicine.
